A madeira é instrumental

Wood is a natural material that keeps much of its character even after it has been cut, dried, and made into a musical instrument. Part of wood’s nature is that it always contains moisture and is always exchanging moisture with its environment as conditions change.

Umidade Relativa

Relative humidity (RH) is a way of measuring moisture in the air, which you’re probably familiar with from weather reports. It measures the amount of moisture in the air compared to the amount of moisture the air could hold at a given temperature.

Teor de Humidade

The moisture content (MC) of wood is the weight of the water in the wood compared to the oven-dry weight of the wood, expressed as a percentage.

As the temperature and humidity of the air change, the MC of wood changes.

When wood absorbs moisture, it expands, and when it loses moisture it contracts. A musical instrument is made of many wood parts that must be made and assembled with high precision. To maintain that precision, expansion and contraction must be kept to a minimum during the building process. This means the MC of the wood must be tightly controlled.

The secret to controlling MC in the wood is controlling the RH in the air. Instrument makers keep their shops at a steady, moderate temperature and humidity close to what the instrument will experience in normal use. Guitarras Taylor, for example, builds its guitars at about 46% RH.

When wood is first cut, it’s too wet to be made into an instrument. It has to be dried (seasoned) first, and then acclimated in the controlled shop environment until its MC stabilizes at the EMC for those conditions.

O Orion® Medidores de umidade sem pinos de dupla profundidade 930, 940 e 950 are accurate, and they can be calibrated on-site with the On-Demand Calibrator. Their pinless design won’t damage the wood the way pin meters do.

They can be set for deep or shallow readings and for different species, which makes them a great fit for musical instrument builders.

Controlando a umidade is one of the most important things you can do to care for your instrument. Keeping it in an environment close to the one it was built in keeps the wood’s MC stable, right where it should be.

Your instrument can withstand short-term extremes of temperature and humidity, but most of the time it should be kept within the range many makers recommend, such as 45% to 55% RH for acoustic guitars. The easiest way to protect it is to keep it in its case whenever you aren’t playing it.

If you live in an area of low humidity, like high mountains or the desert southwest, you’ll need to be especially careful. The best way to protect your instrument in dry areas is to use a case humidifier. These are small, inexpensive devices or packets that you put in the case. They slowly release moisture to help keep the humidity in the case at the correct level.

Watch carefully for signs of stress from moisture extremes on your instrument. Too much moisture will cause parts to expand. On a guitar, for example, the top can swell and arch, raising the bridge. That raises the strings and makes the guitar harder to play, and it may begin to sound dull.

Too little moisture will cause parts to shrink and possibly crack. On a guitar, the top can sink and lower the strings, causing fret buzz. As the fingerboard shrinks, the fret ends can stick out from the sides of the neck.

A madeira sempre contém umidade.

Periodic measurement with an accurate wood moisture meter alerts you to moisture problems, so you can prevent or limit damage to your instruments and your raw wood.
